A carriage bolt, also called a carriage screw, is used for wood-to-wood or wood-to-metal fastening. It has a domed head with a square or round shape, and a square neck that prevents it from turning, once tightened. A carriage bolt is made from steel, stainless steel, or galvanized steel, and can have a hot-dipped galvanized, zinc, or plain finish. Commonly fully threaded, with right-hand threads, a carriage bolt comes in various sizes, lengths, neck widths, and in inch or metric measurement. Some are manufactured to meet standards, such as American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) A307, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B18.5, and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J429.
